The position of our head on our neck has a significant impact on our posture and plays a role in why you might be experiencing pain related to device use. For the average person, the weight of our head in proper alignment is about 10-12 lbs. As the head begins to move forward on the neck, the weight the neck has to support increases by 10 lbs for every inch of forward head posture. The body begins to follow the head and our posture through our neck, mid back, and low back begins to move forward. Therefore the entire body is best aligned by first restoring proper functional alignment to the head.

How you hold your devices can help you relieve your pain!

CELL PHONES and TABLETS Cell phone and tablets are now part of our everyday lives. Changing the way we interact with our devices can make a big difference in preventing musculoskeletal neck and low back pain. Holding the device or propping the device up on pillows to allow you to look at the screen at eye level is key. Using hands-free properties such as voice to text is another way to decrease the stress of using devices for extended periods.
LAPTOP and DESKTOP SETUP Sit-to-stand desks are becoming more common in the workplace and are playing a significant role in preventing musculoskeletal injury. Whether sitting or standing, it is very important that your setup allows you to maintain good posture throughout your work day.

Correcting how you hold your device and your posture will make a big difference in your pain levels but the truth of the matter is, it’s not easy! Your physical therapist can help by teaching you postural corrections and providing an individualized treatment plan, including an assessment of your work space, and exercises that will strengthen the muscles that allow you to maintain these postures with ease.
